Our Trip to DC

On February 20th, a group of us made a trip down to Franklin Square Park in Washington DC. The trip was organized with the help of Erica Steen from the Washington DC JCC. We started off at about 10am by making cheese and tomato sandwiches, and putting together bags of food with snacks, sandwiches, and bottled water. We handed out 50 winter hats, gloves, and scarves to a group of people in need. A good friend of mine, Jill Harmon, came with us on the trip and took some great photos to capture these moments.

This was our first major giving event where we distributed clothing to people that truly needed it. It felt so good to be able to help these people. I can’t accurately put the feeling into words.

I had a conversation with a man named Thomas, who is currently living in the park. He gave me some insight as to what items are most needed by the people living there. I told him about the mission of Twice As Warm, and that we plan on making more trips to Franklin Square. Many of the people were very appreciative that we had came.

It felt so good to be able to make an impact on the lives of others. It is a tremendous task for us to help our nation’s homeless individuals. On any given night, approximately 750,000 men, women, and children are homeless in the US. I hope we can make an even larger impact next time. Twice As Warm will one day be used not only as a way to help the homeless, but as a way to fight homelessness.

Thanks again to everyone getting involved and supporting this cause. We appreciate your continued support and look forward to seeing what we can accomplish in 2011! If you’d like to get involved, please feel free to contact me!

You can see more photos from the trip on Jill Harmon’s website.

Brian, I wish I could have been there. I have posted this on a couple of the organization sites I belong to as an inspiration. I’m proud to have had you briefly pass through my city last fall.

I hope you don’t mind me using you and your efforts, on behalf of those in need, as an example to my family and friends of what can be accomplished when we look inward to find a way to make positive changes.

I am proud of you and inspired by your mission.
